Statement

I find the elegance and simplicity of forms in nature to be intriguing and inspirational. This is the foundation for my work. The use of both photography and oil painting allows for the exploration and refinement of the graceful lines and curves that are so captivating. My goal is to demonstrate the pure elegance of form as an aspect of beauty.

Bio

Art has always been a part of my life—though in very different amounts at different times. My mother was an artist and my father a scientist and teacher so I was exposed to both as a child growing up in New England. I chose science for my professional career and became a plastic surgeon, a medical specialty in which aesthetics are important.

I received a bachelors degree from MIT and an MD from New York University. My plastic surgery residency was at the University of Pennsylvania. I practiced in Northern California for over 20 years and remain there now as a practicing artist.

I have always taken pictures and got my first “real” camera, a 35mm Leica, when I was 12. I have used it and its many successors to capture the beauty and grandeur of places I traveled to as well as more intimate aspects of the world closer to home. I struggled through the painful learning curve of the transition to digital photography taking many workshops with different experts. Also in numerous workshops I tried out different media but photography has always been the constant bedrock of my art. I am currently enjoying exploring oil painting in great depth by using my photographs as subjects for oil paintings.
